There was a little Indian girl who wanted to get her doll’s hair done. She bought a light skinned doll with green eyes and caramel hair. Unfortunately I was having a hard time getting the style right because it was thin, then her dad says “why didn’t you get a doll that looks like you?!” And then the little girl whispers to me that she doesn’t like the dark hair dolls. The majority of them have a medium/dark skin tone.

I was shocked. Shocked to see a little girl in front of me being ashamed of her skin tone. I wanted to say something, but I didn’t. I feel that people do not understand that whitewashing doesn’t end with fanart. It extends to the media and it is damaging.
